An Interview with Jeanette Harmon, Director, American
Medical Association AMA PRA Standards and Policy

What is your role at AMA?
Director, AMA PRA Standards and Policy - Direct the process by which effective AMA PRA policies, standards, and procedures for CME are established; liaison activities with various medical specialty societies, state medical societies, licensing boards, and government agencies representing the AMA and the Division of CPPD; Direct the processes for PRA certificates, direct credit certificates, and AMA CME activity certificates.

What did you do before coming to AMA?
Manager of Recognition and Improvement for ACCME from Oct 2004 to Mar. 2006; Director of Administration and Member Services for Louisiana State Medical Society for over 10 years, mathematics and special education teacher for 19 years

Since the inception of PI CME what has AMA seen in terms of adoption by the field?
There have been some early adopters that have had some success. While there are some CME providers developing PI CME activities it has not been as widespread as the AMA anticipated. However, the requirements for ABMS maintenance of certification should increase the development of PI CME activities.

What is working well?
Physicians like that it is data-driven and that the changes made actually make a difference in patient care.

What could be done better?
Develop more physician leaders and champions; engage administrators of practices, clinics and hospitals in the process so they will understand the value and encourage more physicians to participate. More performance measures need to be developed as well.

What can a CME provider do to better understand and integrate PI CME
into their program?
CME providers should educate themselves about the requirements and try to establish a mentor relationship with someone who has successfully done it. Enlist a physician champion, start small, educate physicians about the process, and be flexible with the interventions.

Where do you see PI CME in the scope of physician CPD in the next five years?
Engaging in PI CME projects will be a large part of most physicians’ education in the next five years. Residents are now participating in this process during residency and will demand it. As more practicing physicians participate and experience the benefits and as more physicians go through the MOC process most physicians will become more comfortable with it and want to engage more.

Is there anything else you would like to tell the IACME audience?
The AMA is currently determining revisions in the AMA PRA credit system to recommend to the Council on Medical Education. This process should be complete and the information disseminated to CME providers in mid-2010. The AMA staff is always available for consultation or to answer questions from CME providers. We encourage people to email or call us with any issues or suggestions for changes that should be made.

Call for CME Case Studies
Have you encountered a situation in your practice of CME that was a learning experience that you are willing to share? The IACME is asking members to help contribute to the shared expertise of our group by publishing cases from real life experience. Please write them up in a brief paragraph and send to Nikita Berry at nberry@rsna.org. Please let us know if you would like to be acknowledged or remain anonymous.
